Baby Feeding – Smarter, Not Harder

There are some outdated views around baby feeding and pressure to put all our energy into militant routines and ensuring widespread times between feeds. You may find it helpful to know you are unable to overfeed a breastfed baby. Normal infant behaviours will have your baby regularly needing to be fed and often feeding is about your baby needing to be close to you, alongside nutritive benefit.

So chuck out the notebook, forget the fancy app and stop clock-watching (unless your baby has a medical condition, was premature or was born of a low birth weight and you need to monitor feeding patterns/amounts). You can relax and feed your baby as and when they need it. Feeding usually requires less outside, external input and when you cut out the noise of others, and focus on responsive feeding things can feel easier.

Overthinking, tracking and listening to outdated advice can be overwhelming, or worse make a breastfeeding mum feel like she failing. To optimise your feeding efficiency it is always worth having your latch checked by a professional, to ensure your baby is getting as much as they need from each feed but most importantly to protect your nipples. Don’t worry, you’ve got this!
