Babies ‘react more favourably’ to smell of foods mothers ate late in pregnancy

Press Release: The Modern Midwife Responds to Exciting Research on How Maternal Diet Can Influence Babies’ Preferences

February 2025 – London, UK – A fascinating new study by Durham University and Aston University has revealed that babies respond more positively to the smells of foods their mothers ate late in pregnancy, like kale and carrots. This finding suggests that what mothers eat during pregnancy might help shape their babies’ food preferences right from birth.

Marie Louise, The Modern Midwife, is excited by this discovery but also stresses that every pregnancy is unique, and it’s important for mums-to-be to listen to their bodies. “This research is certainly interesting and backs up previous studies, but I want to remind all expecting mums that there’s no need to feel pressured into eating certain foods. It’s about finding a balanced, nourishing diet that works for you and feels good,” says Marie Louise.

The study highlights how babies can recognise the flavours they were exposed to while in the womb, which could influence their reactions to certain foods after birth. While this is a great reminder of the power of our food choices, Marie Louise emphasizes that pregnancy is about nourishment, not perfection. “It’s all about making choices that support your overall health and well-being, rather than stressing over specific foods. There’s never a one-size-fits-all approach, so it’s important to find what works for you.”

Marie Louise has long advocated that “learning starts in the womb,” a concept she introduced in her first book, The Modern Midwife’s Guide to Pregnancy, Birth, and Beyond. She explains that the womb is not just a place for physical growth, but also a space where babies begin to experience and learn about the world around them, including sound, taste, and smell. This new research is a wonderful confirmation of that idea, showing how early sensory exposure can play a role in shaping a child’s preferences and experiences.

As a midwife and mum of two, Marie Louise encourages mothers to enjoy their pregnancy journey, listening to their bodies and making food choices that feel right for them.
